Momen seeks Thai support resolving Rohingya crisis

DHAKA, Aug 1, 2019 (BSS) – Foreign Minister Dr A K Abdul Momen today sought Thailand support as current chair of the ASEAN in early safe and secure Rohingya repatriation.

“Bangladesh has a lot of expectations from Thailand as the current Chair of ASEAN to resolve this issue,” he said while holding meeting with his Thai counterpart Don Pramudwinai in Bangkok on sidelines of the 26th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) this evening, according to a message received here.

During the meeting, Momen warned Don about security risk for the entire region if the Rohingya crisis prolongs.

The minister also highlighted negative impact on presence of these large number of Rohingyas on host community. The Thai Foreign Minister assured that Thailand will continue working to resolve this issue.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister mentioned that Dhaka attaches highest priority on maintaining good relations with the neighboring countries. Both ministers expressed satisfaction over the existing bilateral relations Between Dhaka and Bangkok.

Momen accentuated on increase of bilateral trade and investment and collaboration in different areas between the two countries. He urged Thai enterprises to make investment in agro-based industries in Bangladesh.

Both Foreign Ministers agreed to promote and facilitate more interactions among the businessmen from both sides.

Momen thanked the Thai government for introducing Bangabandhu Chair PhD fellowship at Asian Institute of Thailand.

The foreign minister left Dhaka today for Thailand to attend the ARF. He is expected to return here on August 3.
