Anisul off to Switzerland

DHAKA, July 28, 2019 (BSS) – Law Minister Anisul Huq today left here for Switzerland to attend the review meeting of United Nations Convention against Torture (UNCAT).

The meeting is going to be held in Geneva from 30-31st July.

Anisul will head the Bangladesh delegation consisting state minister for foreign affairs Md Shahriar Alam, senior secretary of Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division of the concerned ministry Mohammad Shahidul Haque and other representatives from different ministries and agencies.

The meeting will discuss the anti torture reports, which were sent from Bangladesh for the very first time.

On December 10 in 1984, UNCAT was first signed in New York for standing against torture, cruelty or inhuman behaviors.

However, Bangladesh signed UNCAT on October 5 in 1998 and enacted the ‘Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act, 2013.

So far, a total number of 166 countries have signed the UNCAT.
