Bangladesh cricket team improve lot: PM

DHAKA, July 8, 2019 (BSS) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today showered praises on Bangladesh cricket team for their excellent performance in the ongoing ICC World Cup Cricket, saying that the Tigers have improved a lot in the game.

“I watched the matches (on television). When I was in China I also witnessed Bangladesh’s matches in the ICC Cricket World Cup … Bangladesh has improved a lot in the game,” she said.

The prime minister’s appreciation came while replying to a question at a press conference about the performance of Bangladesh cricket team in the World Cup.

The press conference was arranged to brief the media on the outcome of her just-concluded bilateral official visit to China.

Sheikh Hasina, also an avid cricket fan, said Bangladesh locked horn with famous cricket teams which was a big achievement for the team. “They showed excellent performance there,” she said.

“It’s a big achievement for us as we have gone far away by playing against giants,” she added.

The prime minister said Shakib (al Hasan) and Mustafiz (ur Rahman) have taken places in the world cricket by showing their performance.

Sheikh Hasina said she does not want to put blame on anybody for Bangladesh team’s failure to qualify for the semifinals.

“There is need of luck at many times … only four teams out of ten moved into the semis,” she said.

The prime minister said she did official works and like that she watched cricket matches. “I didn’t see lack of confidence among our boys … they’ve showed their enough courage,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina said the Bangladesh team got back their self-confidence and their performance will improve gradually.

“There is nothing to put blame on the (Bangladesh) team … all teams except the four who went into the semis could be blamed,” she said.

The prime minister said she never discourages the Bangladesh team. “I always praise our boys,” she said.

Pointing out Bangladesh team’s excellent performance, particularly against Australia, she said Bangladesh scored 333 runs chasing 384 against the Aussies.

Sheikh Hasina also briefly highlighted her government’s initiatives for development of sports and games in the country.
