AL celebrates 70th anniversary

DHAKA, June 23, 2019 (BSS) – Bangladesh Awami League (AL), one of the country’s oldest political parties, today celebrated its 70th founding anniversary in a befitting manner.

Founded on this day in 1949, Awami League has been transformed into an organisation of the masses by leading all the democratic-political-social-cultural movements including the long arduous struggle for freedom and the War of Liberation.

Though the country’s biggest political party was floated as Awami Muslim League at the historical Rose Garden at KM Das Lane in Dhaka, the word ‘Muslim’ was dropped at its third council in 1955.

The party drew up an elaborate programme to celebrate the founding anniversary across the country.

The anniversary programme began by placing wreaths at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the premises of Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi in the morning.

To mark the anniversary, national and party flags were hoisted atop all party offices including the central office.

Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the founding anniversary programmes of the party by hoisting the national flag as well as releasing pigeons and balloons in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi in the capital this morning.

AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader raised the party flag on the occasion while the national anthem was sung.

Earlier, Sheikh Hasina placed a wreath at the portrait of the Father of the Nation in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban.

After laying the wreath, the prime minister stood in solemn silence for sometime as a mark of profound respect to the memory of Bangabandhu, the architect of independence.

Flanked by senior leaders of the party, Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Bangladesh Awami League, placed another wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu on behalf of her party.

Awami League Advisory Council members Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed and Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Presidium members Begum Matia Chowdhury, Advocate Sahara Khatun, Dr Abdur Razzaque, Advocate Abdul Matin Khashru, Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan and Pijush Kanti Bhattacharya, General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, Industries Minister Nurul Mazid Mahmud Humayun, Science and Technology Minister Architect Yeafesh Osman, Housing and Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim, Railways Minister Advocate Nurul Islam Sujon were present.

Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam and South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokan as well as leaders of Dhaka North and South City AL were also present.

Later, leaders and workers of different political, social, cultural and professional bodies and a cross section of people paid homage to Bangabandhu.

Leaders and workers of Dhaka City South and North units of AL, Awami Jubo League, Awami Swechchhasebak League, Jatiya Sramik League, Bangladesh Chhatra League, Krishak League, Jubo Mahila League and Mahila Awami League also placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu.

A delegation of Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC) led by Presidium member Lt Col (retd) Muhammad Faruq Khan placed wreaths at the mausoleum of Bangabandhu at Tungipara in Gopalganj this morning.
