Bangladesh now a food-surplus country: Dr Hasan

DHAKA, May 30, 2019 (BSS) – Information Minister and Awami League Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud today said under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh has turned into a country of food surplus from a country of food deficit.

“Bangladesh is now a country of food-surplus. In the next fiscal year, the country will export 10-15 lakh metric tons of rice,” he told a discussion cum iftar mahfil in Ladies Club auditorium at Eskaton here marking the Homecoming Day of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He said during the tenure of BNP- government, 18 farmers were shot dead as fire was opened at their movement for fertilizer. When BNP comes in power, the country becomes a food deficit one, he added.

AL Presidium Member Begum Matia Chowdhury, Advisory Council Member Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, AL Joint General Secretary and Education Minster Dr Dipu Moni, Organizing Secretary Ahmed Hossain, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon, AL Central Working Committee Member Advocate Qamrul Islam and Dhaka City South unit of AL President Abul Hasnat and General Secretary Shahe Alam Murad addressed the function, among others.

Hasan said BNP has no right to talk about agriculture and farmers as the party could not provide fertilizer to the farmers rather farmers were killed during their tenure.

The minister said the then finance minister of BNP government said the country saw food deficit as the people were taking food three times a day and BNP suggested people for taking potato instead of rice. It was mockery with the nation, he said.
