Eid holidaymakers start leaving capital

DHAKA, May 30, 2019 (BSS) – Eid holidaymakers started leaving the capital Dhaka today and it is expected that huge rush of home-goers will begin tomorrow with the beginning of long vacation of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of Muslims, is expected to be celebrated on June 5 as it is dependent on moon sighting.

The government, BRTA, BIWTA and the law enforcement agencies have already taken all-out preparation to ensure a hassle-free and safe journey for home-goers.

The capital’s Sadarghat lunch terminal, Sayedabad, Gabtoli and Mahakhali bus terminals and Kamalapur railway station today saw a crowd of home-goers as people especially construction workers, day laborers and other low income people left the capital.

The government employees, who took leave on June 3, also left the capital today to enjoy the festival at their village home with their near and dear ones.

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) is operating a central control room in Dhaka, round-the-clock from today and it will be continued to June 9, to ensure smooth journeys for home-goers during the Eid vacation.

Bangladesh Police has instructed police officials to verify drivers’ licenses, buses’ fitness certificates and other vehicle documents prior to each Eid journey, to ensure a hassle-free and safe journey for home-goers.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary said in a directive to police officials that bus helpers may not replace drivers, and initiatives will be taken so that no vehicles carry passengers on the roofs of buses.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said travelling will be much easier and more comfortable during this Eid all roads are functional.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) is providing special service to waterway passengers from today aiming to ensure their safe journey during the Eid-ul-Fitr.

Talking to BSS over phone, Manager of Daulatdia Ghat of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Shafiqul Islam said movement of goods carrying trucks will be suspended on Paturia- Daulatdia ferry route six days before and after Eid-ul-Fitr and 20 ferries will carry passengers to ensure their safe journey.

Police have taken different measures to ensure safety on roads and hassle-free journey for holidaymakers ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha.

Adequate policemen have been deployed at entry and exit point of every terminal and also on the roads and highways to ensure smooth vehicular movement.

Police are checking the licenses of drivers and fitness of vehicles before the buses begin their journey from the terminals. The organisations of transport owners and workers will help the law enforcers to this effect. Speed of vehicles plying on the roads and highways are also being monitored.

Operation of mobile courts remains in effect while transport owners’ bodies installed closed circuit (CC) cameras at the bus terminals.

The transport owners and workers were also directed to comply with the traffic rules and regulations, including not plying vehicles without fitness, route permits, driving license, avoiding competition with other vehicles on the road, among others.
