Biman’s aircraft skids off Yangon runway, 19 injured

DHAKA, May 8, 2019 (BSS) – A Biman Bangladesh Airlines Dash-8 aircraft skidded off runway at Yangon international airport amid rough weather, wounding at least 19 out of 33 passengers and crews.

“There were 29 Passengers and four crews on board. All are safe, but 19 passengers and one infant received injuries and have been sent to hospital,” Biman’s Spokesperson Shakil Meraj told newsmen here.

He said flight BG-060 left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) at 3:45 pm from Dhaka to Yangon and suffered an overrun incident on landing at approximately 6:22 pm local time there today.

Meraj, general manager (PR) of the national flag carrier, said Biman sent a special flight tonight to bring back passengers and crew from Yangon, “The special flight BG 1060 departed at 11:25 pm to Yangon,” he added.

Biman, he said, is providing assistance to the passengers in Yangon. “Families of passengers on board flight BG-060 are requested to contact us on the following emergency response numbers for further assistance +88028901530,” he added.

Earlier after the incident, Bangladesh High Commissioner to Myanmar Manjurul Karim told BSS over the phone that at least 15 passengers including pilots were rushed to the hospital but none of them was under life threatening condition.

The aircraft sustained major damage, he said.

The High Commissioner said Bangladesh mission officials in Yangon have been directed to provide all kinds of support to the passengers.
