JP candidate Patwari wins in Sundarganj by-polls

 GAIBANDHA, Mar 13, 2018 (BSS) – Jatiya Party (Ershad) candidate Shamim Haider Patwari today won in the by-election to Gaibandha-1 (Sundarganj) constituency.

Regional election officer and returning officer GM Shahatab Uddin
announced the result of the by-polls unofficially at the conference room of the UNO office here around 9 pm.

Shahatab said JP-Ershad nominated candidate Barrister Shamim Haider
Patwari bagged 78,926 votes while his nearest Awami League nominated
candidate Afruja Bari secured 68,913 votes.

The voting of the by-polls began at 8 am at 109 centres of all the 15
unions and a pourashava of the upazila and continued till 2 pm without any break, said district election officer Mahbubur Rahman.

He said the voters’ turnout was 44.46 percent in the election.

A large number of people, including officials, candidates and their agents and journalists, were present during the announcement of the result.

The Gaibandha-1 fell vacant for second time following the death of Golam Mostafa Ahmed, who was elected MP, from the constituency in the by-polls on March 21, 2017 on Awami League ticket.

Earlier, the seat was vacant for the first time when ruling party
lawmaker Manjurul Islam Liton was shot dead by miscreants at his Shahbaz village home near Bamondanga rail station of Sundarganj upazila on December 31 in 2016.
