Tajul for ensuring maximum usage of agricultural land

DHAKA, April 4, 2019 (BSS)- Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives’ (LGRD) Minister Mohammad Tajul Islam today stressed on keeping up self-sufficiency in food by ensuring optimum use of agricultural land.

“In the 21st Century, the development of rural economy and agricultural economy is a prerequisite for the progress of the country and its people …For that reason ensuring optimum use of agricultural land is needed to achieve self-sufficiency in food,” he said.

The minister was addressing the inaugural function of the ‘9th International Agricultural Technology Fair’ at the International Convention Center in the capital.

Tajul said “To take off the pressure on agricultural land, we have to ensure the maximum use of these lands applying modern technology to increase agricultural production.”

He also called for cultivation under food processing area system in rural areas applying cooperative method. He said currently the contribution of agriculture to Bangladesh’s domestic earning is a little bit lower but still almost half of the country’s labor force is involved in agriculture.

The minister said the present government is focusing more on the agriculture sector aiming to save the country from the fear of world-food crisis in the near future. There is no chance of neglecting agriculture when it comes to economic policy-making, he added.

The fair comprises a total of 688 stalls of 16 countries, jointly organized by the Bogura Rural Development Academy (RDA) and Limra Trade Fairs and Exhibitions Pvt.

Presided over by the secretary of rural development and cooperatives Md Kamal Uddin Talukder, among others, Lima Trade Fair and Exhibitions Pvt Ltd Kazi Director Sarwar Uddin addressed the occasion.

Bogura RDA Director General Md Aminul Islam presented the keynote paper.

Later, the minister visited different stalls in the fair.
