March 7 speech of Bangabandhu was charter of freedom: envoy

DHAKA, Mar 08, 2019 (BSS) – Bangladesh High Commissioner in London Saida Muna Tasneem has said the March 7 speech of legendary leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the ‘charter of freedom’ of the Bangalee nation.

“The then Pakistani government tried to create all sorts of obstacles so that Bangabandhu’s speech could not reach to world people, but his speech reached to them,” he told a discussion in London on Thursday, according a message received here today.

The Bangladesh High Commission in London arranged the discussion and a documentary exhibition at its office marking the historic March 7. Organiser of the 1971 Liberation War Sultan Mahmud Sharif and members of British-Bangladesh community were present.

Speaking at the meeting, Tasneem said the UNESCO recorded the historic March 7 speech of Bangabandhu as a documentary of world heritage in its Memory of the World Register on October 30, 2017. “Today, this speech has been turned into a precious guideline for all freedom-seeking people across the world,” she said.

Noting that Bangabandhu dreamt of making Bangladesh a happy and prosperous Sonar Bangla, the Bangladesh envoy said all should work together to fulfill the dream of the Father of the Nation under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Mahmud Sharif said the historic March 7 speech of Bangabandhu was the cornerstone of unity of the Bangalee nation during their armed struggle in 1971.

The messages of President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, issued on the occasion of the historic March 7, were read out at the outset of the meeting.

General secretary of Bangladesh Awami League’s UK unit Syed Sajidur Rahman Faruq, NRB secretary Ansarul Haque and its organising secretary Abdul Ahad Chowdhury, among others, spoke.
