DHAKA, Feb 25, 2018 (BSS) – Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali today again insisted for quick and smooth repatriation of over a million Rohingyas to their homeland as new Myanmar ambassador in Dhaka Lwin Oo called on him at his office here.
“He (Ali) discussed with the Ambassador about the process of repatriation of Myanmar Residents and emphasized on implementation of the bilateral agreements on repatriation smoothly,” a foreign ministry statement said.
The minister, it said, particularly stressed rebuilding of houses and villages at their ancestral home in Myanmar’s Rakhine state involving international partners to pave ways for voluntary repatriation of Rohingyas.
According to the statement Lwin informed the minister that Myanmar’s home ministry along with their labour, immigration and population ministry were working on the list of 8032 Myanmar residents handed over by Bangladesh during the visit of their home minister’s Dhaka visit from 15-17 February.
It said the envoy also appreciated Bangladesh’s donation of three ambulances for the hospitals of Rakhine state and contribution of around US$ 5 million for building cyclone shelters in that state, bordering Bangladesh.
Ali, however, welcomed the new envoy to Bangladesh and expressed his optimism he would work to consolidate further the bilateral cooperation while Lwin appreciated Bangladesh’s sustained economic growth and development under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.
“He (envoy) informed the Foreign Minister about Myanmar’s desire to strengthen bilateral relations with Bangladesh . . . (referring to) recent enhanced engagement and exchange of visits between Bangladesh and Myanmar and also conclusion of a number of bilateral agreements & instruments in the last few months,” the statement said.
Ali proposed Myanmar to send more students in reputed Bangladeshi universities including the Asian University for Women in Chittagong and added that the two countries could have enhanced cooperation in the areas of agriculture, disaster management and education.
