Sahara seeks vote for Atiqul to build ‘youth-friendly Dhaka’

DHAKA, Feb 23, 2019 (BSS) – Awami League (AL) Presidium Member Advocate
Sahara Khatun today urged the youth, to vote for “boat”, the electoral symbol
of AL and its nominee Md Atiqul Islam in the by-election for the post of
mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) slated for February 28.

“To build a youth-friendly Dhaka, our premier Sheikh Hasina has
nominated the former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers’ and
Exporters’ Association (BGMEA) Md Atiqul Islam for the mayoral post. I urge
the youth to cast their vote for him,” she, also a former home minister,
urged.

She made the call while addressing an electoral rally in front of city’s
Uttara Raj Laxmi Complex area for AL candidate Atiqul.

Praising Atiqul as a dynamic man, AL leader Mohammed Omar Faruk
Chowdhury said he could create technical education and training centers for
youth through a master plan under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina as a large number of young people live here.

“A large part of the garments’ industry is in the city’s northern side.
That is why Atiqul who is also a successful businessman should be elected as
mayor in the forthcoming by-polls, “he said.

The last elections to DSCC and DNCC were held on April 28, 2015 but the
DNCC mayoral post fell vacant following the untimely death of its mayor,
Anisul Huq.

Besides, a total of 36 new wards were added to the two city
corporations. As per the schedule, by election to DNCC mayoral post and
election to councilor and reserved women councilor posts in newly inducted 36
wards will also be held on February 28.
