‘Community awareness vital to disaster management’

AJSHAHI, Feb 20, 2019 (BSS)- Speakers at a discussion here said that
public awareness alongside improved training facilities is very important for
building effective disaster management initiatives for the people of the
region.

They mentioned that public awareness will not only save the vulnerable
people exposed to natural disasters, in various forms, but also pave the way
for sustainable development in the area.

The observation came at the closing session of a five-day project
orientation and training on disaster management at regional office of Caritas
Bangladesh in Rajshahi city today.

Caritas Bangladesh under its Capacity Building for Community on Disaster
Risk Reduction project organized the training styled “Disaster Management
Act, Standard Order on Disasters, Community Risk Assessment and Risk
Reduction Action Plan”.

Chaired by Acting Regional Director of Caritas Sukleash George Costa, the
session was addressed, among others, by District Relief and Rehabilitation
Officer Aminul Haque and Caritas Senior Program Officer Dr Arook Toppo.

The meeting was told that the main focus of the project is to improve the
capacity of key actors in disaster management together with enhancing the
capacities of communities vulnerable to disaster to respond and cope with
future disasters.

Various issues related to disaster management and risk reduction like
building disaster resilient community in the region were discussed
elaborately in the meeting.
