Re-excavation work of Tena-Chhera Khal begins in Shaghata

GAIBANDHA, Feb 20, 2019 (BSS) -A 12-km long re-excavation work of Tena-
Chhera Khal under Jumarbari union of Shaghata upazila in the district began
on Tuesday.

Operation and Maintenance Division of Bangladesh Water Development Board
(BWDB) will implement the work under the project of Re-excavation of Small
river, Khal and Water Bodies in 64 districts (Ist phase) at the cost of TK
1.80 crore while Government of Bangladesh will provide the fund, office
sources said.

Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangshad and local lawmaker Advocate Fazle
Rabbi Miah formally inaugurated the canal re-excavation work as the chief
guest.

Later, a discussion meeting was also held on the premises of Jumarbari
High School of the upazila with local union parishad chairman Rustom Ali
Akando in the chair.

Deputy Speaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah addressed the meeting as the
chief guest and additional deputy commissioner (Revenue) Tofayel Hossain on
behalf of deputy commissioner Abdul Matin, executive engineer of BWDB
Mokhlasur Rahman, UNO Uzzal Kumar Ghos, and acting upazila Awami League
president Nazmul Huda Dudu were present at the event as the special guests.

Deputy Speaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah said the government led by
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had taken initiatives to re-excavate the canals
across the country so that the canals could get its navigability.

Deputy Speaker Rabbi also instructed the concerned including the
officials and the contractor of BWDB to do the work with transparency and
accountability and complete it properly and timely without any irregularity
and criticism.

Earlier, executive engineer of BWDB Mokhlesur Rahman delivered a welcome
speech highlighting the significance and importance of re-excavation of the
canal and its contribution to agriculture and fisheries sectors to ensure
food security and meet the demand of protein.

Executive engineer of BWDB Mokhlasur Rahman said the work would be
completed by May 30.
