Dhaka Dynamites ensure playoff spot with emphatic win in BPL

DHAKA, Feb 2, 2019 (BSS)- Dhaka Dynamites finally ensured their spot of playoff with a six-wicket victory over Khulna Titans in the 42nd match of the Bangladesh Premier League T20 held on Saturday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium at Mirpur here.

Dhaka needed to win this to advance to the next round and they have pulled off an overwhelming victory and will now face Chittagong Vikings in the Eliminator.

Batting first after winning the toss, Khulna Titans scored a moderate total of 123 for 9 from their allotted 20 overs.

Khulna Titans lost three wickets quickly in the beginning of their innings and it continued in regular intervals.

David Wiese (30), Nazmul Hossain Shanto (24) and Brendon Taylor (18) got off a good start but could not convert those into a big knocks as Khulna lost wicket in regular intervals.

Rubel Hossain and Shakib Al Hasan shared two Khulna’s wickets conceding 27 and 32 runs respectively.

In reply, Dhaka rode on a solid opening stand Upal Tharanga and Sunil Narine reached home with six wickets in hand.

The duo shared 43 runs for the opening stand before Saddam Hossain broke the partnership removing Sunil Narine for 35 runs while Traranga composed a brilliant 30-ball off 42 runs hitting four boundaries and two over boundaries.

Khulna Titans backed in the match taking two more wickets in the quick succession.

But, Nurul Hasan made an unbeaten 26-ball off 27 and Kieron Pollard supported him with unbeaten 9 as Dhaka reached home with 31 balls to spare.

Mahmudullah was the most successful bowler as he captured two Dhaka’s wickets conceding 14 runs.

Upal Tharanga of Dhaka was named the player of the match for his impressive batting performance.

After the match, winning Dhaka’s skipper Shakib Al Hasan said: “Big relief as we have qualified. From now on, every match is a knock out game. Hopefully we kick on from here. We have been bowling well, it’s just our batting that was not clicking. Hopefully we continue this performance and win some more games for Dhaka. We need to give something back to the crowd.”

Losinh Khulna’s skipper Mahmudullah said: “As I mentioned earlier, it was a tough tournament for us. We didn’t perform well but it was a learning curve, just that we need to move on. It feels good when the supporters are behind you if the team is not doing good. Khulna owners have been wonderful.

With this win, Dhaka Dynamites secured 12 points from 12 matches but ensured their playoff spot by virtue of better run rate. On the other hand bottom raked Khulna Titans remained at their previous credit of four points playing the same number of outings. Rajshahi have been shunted out of the competition on net run rate.
