Shai Hope snatches victory from Tigers
DHAKA, Dec 11, 2018 (BSS)- Opener Shai Hope scored his career best match-
winning ton as visiting West Indies bounced back to level the three-match ODI
series 1-1 with a four-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the second ODI held
at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the capital on Tuesday.
The right handed Caribbean opener, who hit his career third ODI ton,
composed unbeaten 146-run off 144-ball with 12 boundaries and three over
boundaries as West Indies chased down the target with two balls to spare.
It was the first win for West Indies on the tour after two bad defeats in
the Tests and one thrashing in the first ODI.
The visitors suffered early batting jolt as they lost Chandrapaul Hemraj
in the second over off Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s delivery. Shai Hope then built
two important partnerships — first 68-run with Darren Bravo (27) for second
wicket stand and 62-run with Marlon Samuels (26) for third wicket stand — to
keep West Indies on course.
Bravo was eventually bowled by Rubel Hossain while Samuels was removed by
Mustafizur Rahman.
After that, West Indies suffered a little wobble in the middle as they
lost Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell and Roston Chase in a quick succession.
But, Shai Hope kept his nerve cool and took the team towards the victory
while Keemo Paul provided an ample support to Hope with an unbeaten knock of
18 runs.
Rubel and Mustafizur were the most successful bowlers for Bangladesh as
they picked up two West Indies wickets conceding 57 and 63 runs respectively.
West Indies’s Shai Hope was named the player of the match for his match-
winning century.
Earlier, brilliant half centuries from the bat of Shakib Al Hasan,
Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal saw Bangladesh scored a competitive total of
255 for 7 from 50 overs after the visitors put Bangladesh to bat first.
The Tigers suffered a blow when opener Liton Das was sustained ankle
injury off a fullish delivery from Oshane Thomas in the second over. Liton
had to retire hurt on 5.
Medium pacer Keemo Paul then struck on Bangladesh innings as he sent back
Imrul Kayes. The left handed opener returned to the pavilion without
disturbing the score board.
Another opener Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim have steadied the Tigers’
innings after the loss of Imrul Kayes’s wicket. The duo shared 111-run second
wicket to take the team to a comfortable position before Devendra Bishoo
broke the important partnership removing Tamim.
Southpaw opener Tamim scored his 43rd ODI fifty, 50 off 63 balls, with
four boundaries and one over boundary. He went for the slog sweep off leg-
spinner Devendra Bishoo but failed to get a hold of it and was caught at deep
midwicket by Kemar Roach.
West Indies pacer Oshane Thomas brought West Indies in match taking the
important wicket of set batsman Mushfiqur Rahim. The dependable batsman,
Mushfiqur, who hit his consecutive half centuries in the series, composed
well knock 62-runs off 80-ball laced with five boundaries before he was
caught by Shai Hope.
After the departure of Mushfiqur, Sakib Al Hasan and Mahmudllah revived
the Bangladesh’s innings putting on 61-run for the fourth wicket stand.
Shakib, the top scorer of Bangladesh’s innings, continued to accelerate
in the death overs with Liton returning to batting after Soumya’s dismissal.
Liton had a short stay with 8 runs.
Shakib scored his 40th ODI fifty, smashing six fours and a six in his 62-
ball 65-run knock.
Mahmuduullah supported him with a priceless 30 runs off 51 balls
featuring three boundaries before he was accounted by Rovman Powell.
Oshane Thomas was the most successful bowler from West Indies side as he
grabbed three Bangladesh’s wickets conceding 54 runs.
The series deciding third and final ODI between the two sides will be
held on Friday (December 14) in Sylhet.
