EC declares 80 appeals valid, rejects 76

DHAKA, Dec 06, 2018 (BSS) – The Election Commission (EC) today declared 80 appeals valid and rejected 76 on the first day of hearing of 160 pleas filed by the aggrieved whose candidatures were scraped earlier by returning officers during the initial scrutiny.

The commission also kept appeals of four candidates pending, EC Joint Secretary SM Asaduzzaman told BSS.

EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed earlier said some 543 candidates challenged the cancellation of their nomination papers by the returning officers. Of the rest, he said, decisions on 150 petitions would be given tomorrow and 233 would be sorted out on Saturday.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda and other four Election Commissioners Mahbub Talukdar, Md Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Brigadier General (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury held the hearing at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon area here today.

The 80 candidates who got back their candidacies included BNP candidates Morshed Liton in Bogura-7 constituency, Md Tamij Uddin in Dhaka-7, Major (retd) Akhteruzzaman in Kishoreganj-2, Golam Mawla Rony in Patuakhali-3 and Khandker Abu Ashfaque in Dhaka-1 and Md Faridul Kabir Talukder Shamim in Jamalpur-4.

The candidates, whose appeal petitions against cancelation of nomination papers by returning officers, have been denied by the Election Commission, could go to the court.

Earlier, during the scrutiny on Sunday, returning officers accepted a valid 2,279 nomination papers and turned down 786.

The last date of withdrawal of candidature is December 9 while election symbols will be allocated on December 10.

The election will be held on December 30.
