Build sustainable embankments to save haor from flood: President

DHAKA, April 9, 2017 (BSS) – President Abdul Hamid today expressed grave concern over inundation in haor region’s crop lands following recent flash flood and asked the authorities concerned to construct embankment using sustainable technology to protect the haor people from the flood.

He also called upon affluent people of the society to stand by the affected haor dwellers to help them address their sufferings, said a press release of Bangabhaban.

Noting that haor people have to survive by struggling with nature, the President said the haor people depend on single crop (boro paddy) to lead their livelihood but they very often become the victims of natural calamities.

“But the loss of this year’s flash flood in the area is unprecedented. A vast crops land of Kishoreganj, Sunamganj, Netrakona, Habiganj and Brahmanbaria went under water recent time due to the damage of embankments just before harvesting of boro paddy, intensifying their untold sufferings,” President Hamid mentioned.

The President, in the meantime, talked to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about the overall situation of haor and the prime minister assured of taking necessary steps to get rid of the sufferings, the release said.
