Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha Bill, 2018 passes in parliament

SANGSAD BHABAN, Oct 27, 2018 (BSS) – The Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha Bill, 2018 was passed today in the parliament with a view to bring the organization into a legal frame.

Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu moved the bill in the House which was unanimously passed by voice votes with Deputy Speaker Fazley Rabbi Mia in the chair.

Piloting the bill, the Information minister said the proposed bill will replace the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha Ordinance, 1979.

As per the proposed bill, the headquarters of the organization will be established in Dhaka and its branch offices will be set up anywhere of the country, if necessary, with prior government permission.

The organization will have a mandate to undertake programme for overall development and modernization of the agency under the proposed law.

There will be a 13-member Board of Directors, including its chairman–the administration and operation of the organization will depend on the Board.
The Managing Director of the organization will provide the secretarial support to the Board.

The chairman of the organization will be appointed by the government and he will remain in the position for three years.

Any journalist who has at least 18 years experience could be appointed as the Managing Director by the government and the Managing Director would also be the chief editor of the organization, according to the bill.

Earlier, the bill was placed in the House and then was sent to parliamentary standing committee for providing report after further scrutiny.
