Bangladesh to join WorldSkills general assembly in Amsterdam Oct 15-16

DHAKA, Oct 14, 2018 (BSS)- Bangladesh for the first time is going to participate in the WorldSkills General Assembly (GA) to be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on October 15-16.

With the theme ‘Uniting for Youth: Building Networks for Innovative Skills Solutions’, the two-day general assembly will focus various issues on skills development for building the confidence of millions of young people, empowering communities and fueling economies across the globe.

Ingrid van Engelshoven, Minister of Education, Culture and Science, The Netherlands will inaugurate the assembly while Simon Bartley, President of World Skills Council will chair the inaugural session.

A four-member high-level Bangladesh delegation led by Md Nojibur Rahman, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister left Dhaka for Netherlands on Saturday, said a press release here today.

Other members of the delegation include Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Skill Development Council (NSDC) ABM Khorshed Alam, Director Md Rezaul Karim and Deputy Director Kamruzzaman.

Delegation from a total of 79 member countries of WorldSkills International will attend the assembly at its headquarters in Amsterdam.

Prior to attending the general assembly, the new member countries including Bangladesh had an orientation meeting on Sunday to gather knowledge about the general assembly.

Before leaving for Amsterdam, Khorshed Alam said this general assembly is very important for Bangladesh as the country will have the opportunity to acquire ideas about the upcoming WorldSkills Competition in Kazan, Russia next year.

This general assembly will open an avenue for Bangladesh for networking with other member countries for securing the membership at the board of WorldSkills Council in Kazan, Russia, he said.

“We could not attend the WorldSkills Competition 2019 unless we could secure membership of the WorldSkills International,” he added.

Mentioning about Bangladesh’s activities at the global forum, Alam said a delegation of NSDC last year attended the pre-assembly meeting in Hong Kong to make the country familiar among the members and highlight its activities and progress in skill development.

“Considering all these, we hope, Bangladesh will be able to get membership at the Board of WorldSkills Competition,” he expected.

After the general assembly, the chief executive officers (CEOs) of National Skill Development Council (NSDC) of the member countries will meet to share the nation programmes at their respective countries, said Khorshed Alam.

The WorldSkills General Assembly (GA) is held every two years between the WorldSkills Competitions.

The GA meeting includes the meetings of WorldSkills International’s Competition and Strategy Committees comprising of the technical and official delegates respectively, representing each WorldSkills member country or region, along with the WorldSkills International General Assembly.

WorldSkills has built a movement that is changing the lives of young people through skills as 79 member organizations reach two-thirds of the world’s population and create measurable impact at every level.
