Veteran AL leader Mohiuddin Chowdhury passes away

CHITTAGONG, Dec 15, 2017 (BSS) – Veteran Awami League (AL) leader and Chittagong city
unit President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury passed away at a hospital here early
today. He was 74.

The former city mayor breathed his last around 3 am at city’s Max
Hospital, Mohiuddin’s son Mahibul Hasan Noufel told BSS today.

Chowdhury, one of the organizers of Liberation War and most loveable
political leader to the people of the region, had been suffering from heart
and kidney complications for long. He was put on life support at Max Hospital
at Mehedibagh in the port city on Thursday evening.

He left his two sons, two daughters, wife and a host of relatives, friends,
well-wishers and huge political fellows to mourn his death.

The three times elected mayor of the port city was taken to Max Hospital on
Thursday afternoon for kidney dialysis, Dr Selim, son-in-law of Chowdhury,
told BSS.

“He felt discomfort during the dialysis. We put him on life support at the
intensive care unit in the evening,” said Dr Liakat Ali, Managing Director of
MAX Hospital.

Osman Gani, personal assistant of Chowdhury, told BSS that the former mayor
was brought to the hospital for routine kidney dialysis but his condition
deteriorated and he passed away around 3 am today.

Family members said his namaz-e-janaza will be held after Asr prayers on
historic Laldigi Maidan in the port city. He will be buried at his family
graveyard at city’s Chasma hill.

Earlier, Chowdhury was admitted to the Max Hospital on Nov 11 after he
felt unwell and later airlifted to Dhaka’s Square Hospital the following day.

He was taken to Singapore on Nov 16 for better treatment. He underwent a
surgery there. After returning to Bangladesh, he was admitted to the Square
Hospital again.

He returned home in Chittagong on Tuesday.

The death of Chowdhury cast a pall of gloom in political, cultural and
social arenas in the city and elsewhere in the district.

As the news spread, leaders of different political parties, their front
organizations, professional bodies rushed to his Chasma hill residence.

Meanwhile, leaders of city AL, Chittagong south and north districts, its
front organizations, including Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul
Quader, MP, city Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin and former Minister Afsarul Amin, MP
visited his residence this morning.
