HC upholds death of 2 in Momin murder trial

DHAKA, Dec 7, 2017 (BSS) - The High Court (HC) today upheld death of two and life imprisonment of six others in its judgement on appeals and death reference in a case lodged over 2005 murder of Dhaka Commerce College student Kamrul Islam Momin.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Bhabani Prasad Singha and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam passed the order, upholding death for Tarek alias Zia and Sakhawat Hossain Jewel.

Momin was gunned down by goons near his North Ibrahimpur residence on September 13, 2005. His father lodged a murder case against 26 including then officer in-charge of Motijheel Police Station AKM Rafikul Islam as the main suspect.

Rafikul died in jail in 2015 after being convicted in the case.

Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 in 2011passed verdict in the case sentencing Tarek and Jewel to death. The court also sentenced Mohammad Zafar, Sharif Uddin, Monir Hawlader, Hasibul Haque alias Jony, Habibur Rahman alias Taj and Babu to life imprisonment.

Later, the death reference in the case was sent to the High Court and the defence too filed appeals against the convictions.
