Invest in economic zones, PM urges entrepreneurs

DHAKA, Dec 9, 2015 (BSS)- Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today called upon the entrepreneurs including private banks to invest in economic zones side by side with creating investment opportunities for further development as well as ensuring country's economic prosperity.

"We are establishing 100 economic zones for further uplift and ensuring economic prosperity of the country. The private entrepreneurs including banks could contribute to this end by making investment in these economic zones," she said.

The Prime Minister expressed these views while receiving blankets for the cold-stricken people from Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) at her official Ganobhaban residence here this evening.

BAB President Md Nazrul Islam Majumder also spoke on the occasion while chairmen, directors and high officials of 32 private banks under the association were present.

Sheikh Hasina also urged the entrepreneurs to invest in the country's rural areas in larger volume to change the economic conditions of the poor people.

"Our aim is to ensure development of the rural people and we want to spread uplift all over the country not of a specific place. So we are setting up 100 economic zones across the country for massive industrialisation along with constructing infrastructures including road and bridges and dredging rivers," she said.

The Prime Minister also urged the entrepreneurs to focus on area-based investment. "You will also have to give attention to the investment in your respective areas and give priority to the products that are necessary in your locality," she observed.

Sheikh Hasina also underscored the need for setting up more agro and food processing industries in the country considering their local and export demands.

Referring to her government's liberal investment policy, the Prime Minister said the private entrepreneurs including banks particularly could play an important role in the economic uplift of the poor people.

Reminding the private entrepreneurs that they have a responsibility for ensuring economic solvency of the poor people, Sheikh Hasina said: "We want that the poor people don't need to receive blankets through donation. We want they would achieve ability of purchasing blankets in future," she said.

Spelling out her government's different steps for flourishing private sector, the Prime Minister said her government after assuming office in 1996, made open various sectors including television channels, telephone and banks.

Sheikh Hasina said her government implemented massive programmes for the development of country's various sectors including agriculture, education, health and power and energy, foreign currency reserves.

"The country is advancing in all sectors due to pragmatic steps of the present government," she said.

In this connection, the PM said the country has already made a century in constructing power plants due to the farsighted steps of her government. The country's power generation capacity has already crossed 14,000 megawatts, she said.

She said steps have been taken to set up an LNG terminal at Moheshkhali to meet the growing demand of natural gas.

Sheikh Hasina said her government took steps to develop the neglected southern region alongside developing other parts of the country.

In this context, she mentioned the government's initiatives of river dredging and constructing Paira Seaport.
