War crimes suspect Akkas Moulavi held in Mymensingh

MYMENSINGH, Dec, 09 (BSS) - Police today arrested a Jatiya Party (JP) leader for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity committed during the War of Liberation in 1971.

The arrestee is ASM Rezaul Haque alias Akkas Moulavi, 70, son of late Muslem Uddin of village Purba Chechua in Muktagacha upazila here.

Rezaul, Superintendent of Chechua Dakhil Madrasa in Muktagacha, is also a member of the convening committee of Jatiya Party Muktagacha Upazila unit, JP sources said.

Rezaul, joined hands with other Al-Badr leaders of Muktagacha, an auxiliary force for the Pakistani Army during the Liberation War and committed crimes against humanity including killings and torching of houses of pro-liberation like minded people in Muktgacha upazila.

Rezaul, the former president of JP Muktagacha unit was suspended from his party position once due to allegations of war crimes, JP sources said.

A team of police arrested Rezaul from his residence at Purba Chechua around 12.30 pm, said Abu Mohammad Fazlul Karim, Officer-in-Charge of Muktagacha Police Station.

He was taken to the Muktagacha Police Station, said the OC.

The arrestee will be sent to International War Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka, the OC informed.
