President opens power, energy week tomorrow

DHAKA, Dec 9, 2015 (BSS) - President M Abdul Hamid is scheduled to inaugurate the Power and Energy Week-2015 at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) here tomorrow.

The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has arranged the week with a slogan "Going Ahead Further Towards Light" from December 7-12 aimed at creating awareness among common people of efficient use of power and energy.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid today said the power and energy week would be observed across the country to raise public awareness of power and energy conservation and their efficient use.

Addressing a press briefing at Bidyut Bhaban in the city, he said, "We have taken a challenge to supply uninterrupted electricity to consumers across the country at reasonable price."

He said the government is marching toward materializing the vision-2021 by fulfilling people's demand. There will be also an exhibition of power and energy-related goods with local and international public and private firms showcasing their products and services.

"The Awami League-led government has achieved successes in the power sector and the power generation capacity reached 14,077 MW," Hamid added.

He said the government is encouraging industrialists to set up their industries at planned industrial areas as the government would provide gas connections for the planned industrial area.

"We are planning to invest 1 billion US dollars in Bhutan for importing hydro electricity," the state minister, however, said. He said that the government has decided to construct three Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminals -- two land-based and one offshore.

The Floating Storage and Re-gasification Unit (FSRU) based LNG terminal at Moheshkhali will be set up by December 2018, Hamid added.

Power Cell Director General Mohammad Hossain focused on various aspects of the Power and Energy Week-2015. He said 160 public private organizations will showcase their products and services in the exhibition.

He said the ministry will organise seminars and symposiums at the BICC to discuss power and energy policy.

The Power Cell director general said the ministry will also give awards for outstanding performances in the power and energy sector.
