COMILLA, Aug 30, 2015 (BSS)- Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan today said the government will procure 20 dredgers at a cost of Taka 2,048 crore to improve navigability of rivers in the country.
He said this inaugurating dredging of the Meghna at Daudkanri, said an official release.
Subid Ali Bhuiyan, MP, and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chairman Commodore M Mozammel Haq were present on the occasion.
After the dredging of the mouth of Meghna at Daudkandi, the water transport system on Dhaka-Narayanganj-Comill route will improve. A total of 14 lakh cubic feet soil would be dredged on the 40-kilometre route.
The authorities have already dredged 320-kilometer river on 12 routes at a cost of Taka 106 crore.
Earlier, the shipping minister planted a sapling at Kanchpur landing station to inaugurate forestation activities.
He also visited river erosion sites at Shimulia Bazar and Khuria village in Munshiganj.
Water Resources Minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud and State Minister M Nazrul Islam were present, among others.
