EC asks home ministry to ensure security during city polls

DHAKA, April 21, 2015 (BSS) - The Election Commission (EC) today asked the home ministry to ensure safe voting environment for women, minority communities and the poor during the forthcoming city corporation elections.

A letter signed by EC Secretariat Assistant Secretary M Rajib Ahsan was sent to the senior secretary of home ministry in this regard. A copy of an application submitted by Nari Progati Sangha on the issue was sent along with the letter.

The EC letter has asked the ministry to create equal opportunities and an environment free of fear for women, minority communities and the poor people for voting in Dhaka North, Dhaka South and Chittagong city corporation elections on April 28.

The EC also directed the home ministry to maintain caution over the issues of concern expressed by Nari Progati Sangha.

In its application, Nari Progati Sangha referred to attacks by "identified vested interest groups" on minority communities, women and poor people before and polls in the past and sought preventive measures.

EC sources said the election body took cognizance of the application and asked the home ministry to take necessary steps.
