RAJSHAHI, Feb 23, 2013 (BSS)- As many as 5,500 supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami, its affiliates and other Islamic groups were implicated in cases filed by police over Friday's violence in the city.
Police said the Jamaat-e-Islami and its likeminded Islamic Party's vandalised the Gonojagoron Mancha, set up to demand death penalty to war criminals, including Abdul Quader Mollah, at Alupatti crossing.
According to the police sources, the cases were filed - one each with Boalia Model Police Station and Rajpara Police Station- - on charges of arson and vandalism of Gonojagoron Mancha and attacking police and preventing them from discharging their duties at different other places.
Police have picked up 26 of those implicated from different parts in the city during and after clashes and 18 of them were sent to the jail hajat today.
ABM Rejaul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Rajpara Police Station, said several chases and counter-chases took place between Jamaat-Shibir men and police injuring many people including some 10 cops. Police fired gunshots and teargas canisters to bring the situation under control.
