Brunei to witness more thunderstorms in October, November

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Oct. 6, 2018 (BSS/XINHUA) – The onset of the inter-
monsoon period for Brunei is expected to start in early October, and likely
to last until the end of November, which will bring probably the highest
frequency of thunderstorm occurrences in a year.

According to the latest weather forecast from Brunei Darussalam
Meteorological Department (BDMD), during this transition period, the weather
over the sultanate is greatly influenced by the diurnal forcing where the
local wind plays a pivotal role in producing active thunderstorm clouds in
the rural areas during the afternoon, before moving to coastal and sea areas
at night.

Based on BDMD’s climatological records, the frequency of thunderstorms and
lightning occurrences is the highest during the inter-monsoon period.

BDMD reminded the public in the statement that the risks of floods or flash
floods at low-lying and flood-prone areas, and the risks of landslides tend
to occur especially during more than two hours of moderate to heavy rainfall.
