Discussion on digital security law to continue

DHAKA, Sept 30, 2018(BSS)- The government, editors’ council and journalist unions at a meeting today agreed to continue talks regarding the proposed Digital Security Act.

The government side was represented by three ministers: Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, MP, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs’ Minister Anisul Haq and Post, Telecommunication and Information Technology Minister Mostafa Jabbar and the Prime Minister’s Information Advisor and Editor of the Daily Observer, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, while the Editors’ Council was represented by editors from almost all leading dailies.

General secretary of the Editors’ Council Mahfuz Anam and Law Minister Anisul Haq briefed the press after the meeting.

The law minster said that in case of necessity, the law could be sent to the Cabinet Division for modification.

After the meeting the ministers along with the general secretary of the Editors’ Council said that they had decided to continue talks about the draft law and it was waiting the nod of the president.

Later, in the afternoon the ministers met with journalist leaders.

Mollah Jalal, president of BFUJ, Abu Zafar Surjo, president DUJ and president of DRU, Saiful Islam led their respective teams.

The journalist leaders wanted assurances that the professional safety and honor of journalists are protected under the new law.
