Promoting food safety governance in poultry sector stressed

RAJSHAHI, Sept 27, 2018 (BSS)-Experts and development activists at a
discussion here have unequivocally called for promoting food safety
governance in poultry sector to protect the public health from any poultry-
related disease.

They opined that collective efforts of all public and private entities
concerned can be the effective means of ensuring poultry feed safety coupled
with good poultry farming practice.

They made the call while addressing a sharing workshop with the private
sector business regulation to promote food safety governance at Paba Upazila
Parishad conference hall here on Wednesday.

Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) organized the workshop in
association with UKaid and British Council. An Issue-based project on “Food
Safety Governance in Poultry Sector in Bangladesh” supported it.

Paba Upazila Parishad Chairman Begum Khairunnesha and its vice-chairman
Ashraful Haque addressed the meeting as chief and special guests respectively
with Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zahid Newaj in the chair.

Livestock Officer Dr Khandaker Sagar Ahmed, CAB Project Officer Mijanur
Rahman, Consumers Association President Kazi Nazmul Islam and district unit
general secretary of Bangladesh Poultry Association Enamul Haque spoke as
resource persons.

Field Coordinator of the project Omor D Costa and its field officers
Mohidul Hassan and Mozammel Haque also spoke.

Zahid Newaj told the workshop that measures should be taken to bring all
the poultry farmers, traders, feed manufactures, sellers and others concerned
under necessary training to enhance their knowledge in this field.

Steps have also been taken to bring all the poultry farmers and feed
sellers under registration aims at ensuring safe and good poultry farming
practices for sound public health.

All quarters like farmers, hatchery owners, poultry bird sellers, feed meal
manufacturers and sellers and the field level officers and staffs should work
together to this end, he said.

During his concept paper presentation, Agriculturist Mohidul Hassan gave
an overview of the country’s poultry sector.

He puts forward a set of recommendations on how to make the poultry sector
safe and hygienic.
