Man dead, woman rescued after yacht capsizes in Sydney

SYDNEY, Sept. 24, 2018 (BSS/XINHUA) – A man died and a woman was forced to
make a desperate swim to safety when their small sailing yacht capsized off
the southern coast of Sydney early on Monday morning.

The vessel rolled in windy conditions just before 5 a.m. local time at
Boat Harbour, and the woman was forced to swim through the choppy waves to
safety.

“We believe she was about 20 to 30 metres offshore,” NSW Police acting
inspector Melissa Thompson said.

“It’s a tragic circumstance for that time of the morning and the fact it
was still quite dark, it is remarkable she got to the shore.”

Emergency services spotted the man in the water shortly after and he was
winched up by helicopter but medical personnel were unable to resuscitate
him.

“The seas were quite hazardous which would have made it difficult for
rescue efforts,” Thompson said.

The woman was treated at the scene for hypothermia and exposure and is
currently recovering in hospital.
