Meeting held to finalise US $100m ADB project

DHAKA, Sept 20, 2018 (BSS) – A wrap-up meeting to finalise the tasks of preparing US$100 million Asian Development Bank (ADB) project on Computer Science and Engineering in country’s four universities of Bangladesh held at University Grants Commission (UGC) today.

The universities are- University of Dhaka, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Jessore University of Science and Technology and East West University, said a UGC press release.

A five-member ADB delegation met UGC Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan today.

“By December it will finalize the DPP while the project will be approved by June next year,” said Erik A Bloom, senior social sector specialist of Human and Social Development Division in South Asia Department of ADB. He also said ADB wants to initiate the project by July, 2019.

UGC shall have made the implementing authority of the US$100 million project.

Under this project, ADB will develop infrastructure of 10-storey building each of the universities. Besides this, it will set up incubation center as well as IT startup in these universities.

Professor Abdul Mannan said the proposed project will play a significant role for country’s human resource development in IT sector.

“The universities would be able to produce quality graduates through it. Besides, it will enhance university and industry relationships and build up collaboration with foreign universities in the field of teaching and research works,” he said.

Khaled, Secretary; Khandker Hamidur Rahman, Director of IMCT Division; Dr. Md Fakhrul Islam, Director of Private University Division; Dr. Durga Rani Sarker, Additional Director of Planning and Development Division; Mohammad Maksudur Rahman Bhuiyan, Additional Director of IMCT Division and Md. Shahin Siraj, Deputy Secretary (Administration Division) of UGC, among others, were present on the occasion.
