10,400 more river demarcation pillars to be set up

DHAKA, Sept 20, 2018 (BSS) – The government will set up 10,400 more pillars along river banks to demarcate its boundaries as part of its initiatives for checking land grabbing.

A total of 9,577 boundary pillars have already been set up through demarcating the rivers, this was revealed at a meeting of taskforce on “Checking river pollution: increasing navigability”, an official release said. Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan presided over the meeting.

Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sherif, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque, senior officers of the Shipping Ministry and organizations concerned, among others, attended the meeting.

A committee has been formed led by Chairman of the National River Protection Commission for demarcation of river boundaries. The committee will submit a report within next three months.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) recovered 501.26 acres of land through demolishing illegal infrastructures. Of the recovered land, 307.26 acres of land were recovered around the Dhaka city and 194 acres of land from Narayanganj areas.

It was informed at the meeting, 26 out of 46 cannels have been recovered in and around the Dhaka city. Of the recovered canals, maintenance works are underway in 13 canals.

The government is taking necessary initiatives to protect illegal occupation of cannels.
