67 projects proposed for railway at Tk 76,890.51 cr: Mazibul

SANGSAD BHABAN, Sept 18, 2018 (BSS) – The government has proposed 67
projects in the Seventh Fifth Year annual plan at a cost of Taka 76,890.51 crore to overall
development of the Bangladesh Railway (BR).

“The government would construct 856 km new railway line and 1,110 km dual gauge
double line along with rehabilitation of 725 km railway line under the Seventh Fifth Year
Plan,” Railways Minister M Mazibul Hoque said this, while replying to a tabled question
from treasury bench member Didarul Alam of Chattogram-4 in the Jatiya Sangsad today.

He said the government would also construct railway bridges, level crossings, gates
along with improvement of other infrastructure, adding, “We will procure 100 new
locomotives, one simulator locomotive, four relief cranes and 1,120 passenger coaches.”

The minister informed the House that under the seventh five year plan, the government
would rehabilitate 624 coaches, collect modern maintenance equipment and quality
improvement of signaling system of 81 stations.

“All districts would be brought under railway network by implementing the Prime
Minister’s instruction and as per Railway Master Plan. Currently 44 districts are under
railway network,” he said.

Hoque said the government would take urgent initiatives and once implemented those
by 2020 then nine more districts would be brought under railway network. He added, “The
government has constructed 330.15 km new railway lines since 2009.”
