21,302 km highways are under roads and highways department: Quader

SANGSAD BHABAN, Sept 18, 2018 (BSS) – Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today said presently there are 21,302 km highways under roads and highways department.

“Out of this, national highways are 3,812.78 km, regional highways 4,246.97 km and district highways 13,242.33 km,” he said this, while replying to a tabled question from treasury bench member Begum Sanjida Khanam of reserved seat-24 in the Jatiya Sangsad.

He said the roads and highways department have widened 5,171.27 km highways as well as strengthened 4,331.37 km highways under development sector since 2009, adding, “Besides, the government have completed 4,868.65 km highways carpeting and seal coat, 1,892.41 km highways double bituminous surface treatment (DBST) and 8,158.11 km overlay under non-development sector.”

Quader said the government has upgraded 416.64 km national highways into four lane or more during the last 10 years and 95.28 km four lane upgradation work is underway, adding, “Besides, 394 km four lane alongside service lane both side of the national highway are being constructed.”

During the period, the roads and highways department under its network constructed/reconstructed 914 bridges and 3,977 culverts, the minister informed the House.
