Woman holds high position in Ctg garments, inspires others

DHAKA, Sept 18, 2018 (BSS) – Nasrin Jahan Chowdhury is the name of a bright star of women empowerment in the country. She has been working for about two decades in garments sector in Chattogram. After obtaining masters degree from Physics Department in Chattogram University, Chowdhury joined as a commercial assistant at Bangladesh Hats and Bag (BD) Limited, located in Chattogram Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) in 1993.

Later, her boss appointed her at his other factory named New Ara Fashions MFRS (BD) Limited as a senior manager. Now about 2,000 workers are working under Chowdhury and she is maintaining smoothly the commercial section of the factory.

Her father late Kamal Uddin Ahmed was a mechanical officer of Bangladesh Railway and mother Rokeya Begum is a house wife. She completed her SSC from Aparnacharon High School, HSC from Chattogram City College and finally obtained her honours and master’s degrees from Chattogram University.

“I was joined Bangladesh Hats and Bag (BD) Limited in 1993. Now I’m serving as a senior manager of New Ara Fashions MFRS (BD) Limited. Many of the women working in the CEPZ and BEPZA know about me,” Chowdhury said,

Sources said the CEPZ is one of the top export processing zones among the eight across the country. A total of 170 factories are in operation in the CEPZ. In those factories, around 2 lakh workers are working. Of the total workers, 65 percent are women.

Chowdhury said, “My company authorities always evaluate my works and skills. They never consider me as a woman. They always consider me as a colleague. I am working here with a passion. I always think that this is my second home. I tried my best to perform my duties. Therefore, they keep confidence in me.”

Chowdhury said she said working in the garments sector for last 25 years. “Currently, I’m serving successfully as a senior manager. When I started my carrier in the garments sector, many people thought that it is a big tailoring shop. But, now time has changed. Many educated people both men and women are joining the sector professionally to make their carrier a success.”

Chowdhury married a college teacher named Harunur Rashid in 1995. “My husband is also encourages me to do the job. He always supports me. Otherwise, it could be difficult for me to do the job as I’ve three children. I’m really grateful to my husband.”

Ramiz Haider, an employee of her department said, “We are very happy to work under her guidance. We are learning from her every day. She is very cordial to all the employees. She is working in the sector for the last 25 years with utmost sincerity and skill.”

Another junior colleague, Soma Biswas said Chowdhury is her inspiration in her profession as a garment official.
