Speaker for making sincere efforts to reduce maternal mortality

DHAKA, September 16, 2018 (BSS) – Speaker of the Parliament Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury today urged all to work sincerely to prevent maternal deaths in the country to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal concerning maternal, newborn and child health.

“The challenge of bringing down deaths from maternal mortality to 70 from 76 in one lakh by 2030 is achievable if we work more sincerely according to the work plan under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” she said.

Chaudhury was speaking as the chief guest at a policy dialogue organised by a project entitled ‘Strengthening Parliament’s Capacity in Integrating Population Issues into Development (SPCPD) in the parliament, said a press release.

Chief Whip ASM Feroz presided over the programme while former health and family welfare minister AFM Ruhal Haque, UNFPA representative Dr Asha Torkelson and Professor Habibe Millat were present, among others.

The SPCPD project, financed by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), formerly the United Nations Fund for Population Activities, is being implemented by the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad.
