Rangpur Metropolitan Police begins journey

RANGPUR, Sept 16, 2018 (BSS) – The newly constituted Rangpur Metropolitan
Police (RpMP) began its journey today after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
announced its formal inauguration through a videoconference from the
Gonobhaban.

With inauguration of the RpMP which includes six Thanas, another aspiration
of the Rangpur city people was fulfilled.

On the occasion, the whole city wore a festive look with banners, festoons
and billboards and all six Thana buildings were colourfully illuminated
creating huge enthusiasm among the city dwellers.

RpMP organised a colourful function on Rangpur Metropolitan Police Lines
ground marking the day. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through
videoconferencing addressed and announced the inauguration at around 11 am.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Public
Administration HN Ashiqur Rahman, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing
Committee on Ministry of Home Affairs Tipu Munshi, Vice-chancellor of Begum
Rokeya University Professor Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, Rangpur Area
Commander and General Officer Commanding of 66 Infantry Division Major
General Md Masud Razzaque attended the function.

Divisional Commissioner Mohammad Joynul Bari, Deputy Inspector General of
Police for Rangpur Range Devdas Bhattacharya, Commanding Officer of Rapid
Action Battalion (RAB-13) Mozammel Haque and Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizar
Rahman Mostafa were present.

General Secretary of district Awami League (AL) Advocate Rezaul Karim
Raju, President of city AL Shafiur Rahman Shafi, its General Secretary Tushar
Kanti Mandal, President of district Chhatra League Mehedee Hasan Rony,
leaders and workers of AL and its associate bodies attended the occasion.

Newly appointed RpMP Commissioner Md Abdul Alim Mahmud delivered the
welcome speech on the occasion, which was attended by officials, public
representatives, civil society members, politicians, professionals and local
elite. After inauguration of RpMP by the Prime Minister, a huge ‘Ananda
Shobhayatra’ was brought out from Rangpur Police Lines ground at noon.

Thousands of common people, officials and employees, police members,
political leaders and activists, students, teachers, socio-cultural and
professionals, civil society members and local elite participated in the
‘Ananda Shobhayatra.’

A number of traditional horse-driven carts carrying people also
participated in the ‘Ananda Shobhayatra’ that paraded the main city streets.
Music was played by the police band to celebrate the occasion.

Later, a colourful cultural function was arranged on Rangpur Police Lines
ground in the afternoon followed by fireworks.

Talking to BSS, RpMP Commissioner Alim said the government published a
gazette notification on December 10, 2017 for formation of RpMP as per
commitment of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“On April 12 this year, the Jatiya Sangsad passed the Rangpur Metropolitan
Police Bill, 2018 and a gazette notification was published on April 19 in
this connection,” Alim said.

He said RpMP is constituted with 239.72 square kilometres land area with
six Thanas of Kotwali, Porshuram, Hajirhat, Haragachh, Tazhat and Mahiganj
and several police camps.

Currently, 470 police personnel, including one Police Commissioner, two
Additional Police Commissioners, two Deputy Police Commissioners, one
Additional Deputy Police Commissioner have joined RpMP and 295 others are to
join their respective posts.

“The metropolitan police force will take all necessary steps for making
required facilities available to the people so that they could lead a hassle-
free life,” he said.

In addition to providing uninterrupted legal services to the citizens and
ensuring modern traffic management, the metropolitan police would take all
necessary steps for building a beautiful city.

Alim firmly hoped that the metropolitan police would be able to earn
confidence of the citizens in upholding its professional repute in the days
to come.
