DHAKA, Sept 15, 2018 (BSS) – Dhaka University (DU) authority will hold a meeting of “Paribesh Parishad” on the long overdue Dhaka University Central Student Union’s (DUCSU) election tomorrow.

The agenda of the meeting is ‘About Dhaka University Central Student Union’s (DUCSU) election and hall union poll’.

Paribesh Parishad, a platform comprised of the university authority and the students’ organizations, used to maintain congenial atmosphere on the campus towards holding the student union polls.

DU Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said, “Paribesh Parishad was not functional for long. Now we want to revive the platform to the greater interest of the students.”

A letter from the proctor office was sent to the pro-vice chancellors, treasurer, provosts of the residential halls and the central and DU unit presidents and general secretaries of all active political student organisations to attend the meeting.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman will chair the meeting.

When contacted Prof Akhtaruzzaman said, “We will hear from the representatives of the students’ organisations on the agenda…. We will take next course of action after a fruitful discussion with them.”

The student organisations are eagerly waiting for the meeting as they expressed their positive gesture to hold a free and fair DUCSU and hall union polls soon.

Sonjit Chandra Das, DU unit president of Bangladesh Chhatra League said that their organisation is always ready to participate in the DUCSU election.

“It’s the demand of time to hold the DUCSU poll as future leadership creates from the university. A congenial atmosphere is now prevailing on the campus towards holding the long awaited election as any student organization can arrange meeting and express their opinion freely,” Sonjit told the national news agency.

The left leaning student organizations, however, demanded to take steps to ensure democratic environment at the university and make the Paribesh Parishad effective.

Bangladesh Chhatra Union’s DU unit president Foyez Ullah welcomed the university authority’s move about the DUCSU poll.

Umme Habiba Benojir, president of DU unit of Bangladesh Chhatra Union, said that they will discuss about obstacles of the students’ freedom of expression on the campus. “The hall administrations have to play effective role to create a level playing field for free and fair election,” she added.

On January 17, the High Court asked the DU authorities to hold the DUCSU election at a suitable time, preferably within six months.

The last DUCSU poll was held in 1990.
