11th death anniversary of Mayor Hanif observed

DHAKA, Nov 28, 2017 (BSS) – The 11th death anniversary of Mohammad Hanif, the first elected mayor of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) and former president of Dhaka City Awami League (AL), was observed today with due respect.

Hanif, who suffered critical splinter injuries in the August 21, 2004 grenade attack, died on November 28, 2006.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Dhaka City AL, Mayor Mohammad Hanif Memorial Foundation, front and associate bodies of the ruling AL and different socio-cultural organisations and Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote observed the death anniversary with elaborate programmes.

Different social and cultural organisations paid tributes to Hanif by placing wreaths at his grave at Azimpur in the morning.

City AL (South) President Abul Hasnat and General Secretary Shahe Alam Murad were present, among others.

Besides, the DSCC held a discussion on the life and works of Hanif, also a close associate of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, at Nagar Bhaban.

AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader joined the discussion as the chief guest with Mayor Sayeed Khokon in the chair.

Quader, also minister for road transport and bridges, said mayor Hanif had contributed to every democratic movement of the country, including 1966 six- point movement and 1969 Mass Upsurge.

AL Organising Secretaries Ahmed Hossain, BM Mozammel Haque, Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan and Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, Jubo League Chairman Omar Faruk Chowdhury, Dhaka City South unit of AL president Abul Hasnat and general secretary Shahe Alam Murad, among others, addressed the discussion.
