Women activists for comprehensive efforts to prevent repression

RANGPUR, Nov 28, 2017 (BSS) – Women activists at a human chain programme here have laid emphasis on engaging comprehensive efforts of all concerned with a changed social mindset to prevent repression and violence against women.

They came up with the observation at the post-rally human chain programme arranged in observance of the International Women Repression Prevention Fortnight- 2017 at Katchari Bazar zero point here on Monday.

The district administration in association with the District Women Affairs Department organised the programmes.

Rangpur unit of Jatiya Mohila Sangstha (JMS), Bangladesh Mohila Parishad, Prottyasha Protibondhi Nari O Shishu Unnayan Sangstha, Debi Chowdhurani Polli Unnayan Kendra, LAMB, RDRS Bangladesh, World Vision Bangladesh, BRAC, Eco Social development Organisation, Nari Nirjatan Network, ‘Pollishree’ and other organizations jointly organized the programmes.

Earlier, hundreds of people including women activists, government and NGO officials and employees, human rights and sociocultural activists, professionals, teachers, students and elite, took part in a huge colourful procession paraded the main city streets.

With District Women Affairs Officer Kawser Parveen in the chair, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Ruhul Amin Mian addressed the human chain programme as chief guest.

Chairman of Rangpur unit of JMS Rosy Rahman, General Secretary of district Mohila Awami League Advocate Zakia Sultana Choite, women rights activist of RDRS Bangladesh Somse Ara Bilkis, Executive Director of SEED Sarothi Rani Saha,also spoke on the occasion.

Taking part in the discussion, Rosy Rahman narrated the situation about repression and violence against women and laid emphasis on comprehensive efforts of all stakeholders, including GO-NGOs, to eliminate these social curses and establish gender equality.

Somse Ara Bilkis said the sustainable development goals might not be achieved without brining an end to repression against women and gender disparity to ensure their equal rights, dignity and honour at every sphere in the society.
The chief guest said the government has taken steps to ensure participation of women in all development and sociopolitical activities to build a middle income nation by 2021 and developed country by 2041.

Kawser Parveen stressed on engaging comprehensive GO-NGO efforts to change social mindset toward the women for eliminating all types of repression and violence against women for building a sustainably developed and peaceful society.
