SYLHET, Sept 13, 2018 (BSS) – Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Sringla today said opening up of the new Assistant High Commission Office of India here will create new opportunities for trade, tourism and commerce between North East of India and the Sylhet region.
“I am very happy to note that this year we opened our new Assistant High Commission office in Sylhet. Our new Assistant High Commissioner will take over in the next 3-4 days,” he said while addressing Muktijoddha Scholarship Cheque Distribution Ceremony at Central Auditorium of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology here.
Noting that Sylhet Division is a gateway to Assam, Meghalaya and other North-Eastern states of India, the High Commissioner said “the fast growing economy of Bangladesh and our focus on development of North-Eastern states can complement each other.”
The Indian envoy said the new office will help Indian high commission in faster delivery of visa to people of Sylhet area.
He said the Indian government attaches great importance to its relationship with Bangladesh. “The bilateral relations between our two great nations have witnessed unprecedented heights over the last few years,” he said.
Sringla handed over cheques under the scholarship programme to 216 students.
The Muktijoddha Scholarship Scheme was first launched by the Government of India in 2006 and the ‘Nutan’ scheme was announced by the Honble Prime Minister of India in 2017.
The scholarships are awarded to students who are descendants of Muktijoddhas studying in Higher Secondary and Undergraduate categories to assist their educational needs.
More than 21000 students stand to directly benefit from the scholarship scheme.
