Garment workers to get minimum wage Tk. 8,000 from December

DHAKA, Sept 13, 2018 (BSS)-Minimum monthly salary for garment workers has been increased to Taka 8,000 from the existing Taka 5,300.

Announcing this decision at a press conference here today, State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu said the new wage structure will come into effect from December this year.

As per the previous wage board, apparel workers get Taka 5,300 as the minimum monthly salary.

“The new minimum wage includes Taka 4,100 as basic salary, Taka 2,050 as house rent, Taka 600 as medical allowance, Taka 3,050 as transport allowance and Taka 900 as food allowance,” he said after a meeting at his ministry office here.

Ministry of Labour and Employment formed the wage board for the garment workers January February of this year to fix wage for apparel sector that contributes 84 percent of the country’s total export earnings.

Wage board chairman Syed Aminul Islam, board member and BGMEA president Md Siddiqur Rahman, labour adviser to the Bangladesh Employers’ Federation (owners’ representative) Kazi Saifuddin Ahmed, executive president of Awami League’s workers front Sramik League (workers’ representative) Fazlul Haque Montoo, Kamal Uddin, a teacher of the University of Dhaka (independent member) and additional secretary of the labour ministry Syed Ahmad and workers’ representative Shamsunnahar Bhuiyan, among others, were present at the meeting.
