Govt provided Tk 60,268 cr as subsidies for agriculture in 9 yrs, Matia tells JS

SANGSAD BHABAN, Sept 11, 2018 (BSS) – The government has provided Taka 60,268 crore as subsidies for the agriculture sector in the last nine years.

“Highest subsidies was more Taka 58,129 crore which was given to the fertilizer sector,” said the agriculture minister Begum Matia Chowdhury while responding to a query placed by treasury bench lawmaker M Abdul Latif of Chattagram-11 at the House here today.

In addition to this, Taka 1159.79 crore has been provided as rebate to the electricity sector, subsidies of Taka 86.83 crore for Sugarcane farming, Taka 142.88 crore for rehabilitation and Taka 750 crore was provided for diesel subsidy.

After coming to power, the present government has increased the subsidy for fertilizer by reducing its price, said the Minister at the Jatiya Sangsad, adding that the farmers were used to apply balanced fertilizer as the government continuously provided support for the fertilizer.

Even the farmers are able to produce crop at minimum cost due to providing subsidies to the electricity sector, she said.

Consequently, the country now achieve 4th position in paddy production, 7th position in potato production and 3rd position in vegetable production.
