Palm trees saplings to be planted to check deaths by lighting: Maya

SANGSAD BHABAN, Sept 10, 2018 (BSS) – Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossen Chowdhury Maya today said a move is underway to plant some 31, 38, 465 palm tree saplings across the country for checking causalities due to lightening as the deaths caused by lightening has significantly increased.

“The government has a plan to reduce the deaths by lightening …The government adopted a plan for planting saplings of 10 lakh palm trees in 2017 in the country,” said the minister while replying to a query placed by treasury bench lawmaker Momtaz Begum of Manikganj-2 in the Jatiya Sangsad here today.

The minister said Bangladesh Metrological Department (BMD) has set up Lightning Detection System at eleven places across the country for receiving the forecast messages on lightening.

The 11 spots are Dhaka, Sylhet, Mymensingh, Tetulia, Panchgarh, Badalgachi, Thakurgaon, Koyra, Satkhira, Patuakhali, and Chattagram.

Even the government has made it mandatory to incorporate the matter of lightning resistance terminal into the national building code for protecting the building from lightning, the minister added.

Awareness campaign among the people is being carried out through Bangladesh television, private television channels and newspapers while workshops at the national-level are organized, he added.
