BGB remains alert against arms smuggling before polls: DG

DHAKA, Sept 10, 2018 (BSS) – Director General (DG) of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Major General Md Shafeenul Islam today said they have been kept ready to stop smuggling of illegal firearms into the country well ahead of the national polls.

“We have taken preparations three months ago to stop bringing in illegal firearms ahead of the national election. A coordinated plan has been designed to this end,” he said at a press conference held at Pilkhana headquarters here on the overall progress after DG-level BGB-BSF meeting in New Delhi from September 3-8.

The BGB has already cancelled all leave of its staff, training and other programmes during the period of holding the next general election aimed at putting the entire force in maintaining law and order and protecting the borders.

Referring to the recent BGB-BSF and BGB-Myanmar frontier police meetings, the BGB chief said that fruitful discussions were held during the meetings in friendly environment.

The frontier forces held talks on various issues of mutual interest such as stopping smuggling of illegal drugs and firearms, he informed.

“We are trying to bring down the killings at border to zero level,” Major General Shafeenul said adding that the killing at borders is almost zero as only one was killed at border till September this year.

Replying to a query, he said, “There is no terrorist organization inside our territory. No terrorist act will be allowed.”
