JS adopts obituary reference

SANGSAD BHABAN, Sept 9, 2018 (BSS) – The 10th Jatiya Sangsad on the first day of its 22nd session (Fourth Session of 2018) today unanimously adopted obituary references on a number of distinguished personalities, including two sitting MPs, former Indian Prime Minister, former UN Secretary-General, a former minister, an ex-state minister and other former MPs.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury moved the obituary references separately with brief resumes on those who died since prorogation of the 21st session of the 10th parliament.

The Speaker while moving the references said the House expresses its deep shock at the deaths of two sitting parliament members (MPs) including SM Mostofa Rashidi MP, opposition Chief Whip M Tajul Islam Chowdhury, former Indian Prime Minister Sri Atal Bihari Bajpayee, former secretary general of United Nations Kofi Anan, former minister Kalparanjan Chakma, former state minister Mozaffar Hossen, ex-MP and freedom fighter Alhaz Sharif Khosruzzaman, former MP Alhaz Abdur Rauf Miah, former MP M Fazley Elahi, former MP Alfaz Uddin, former MP M Abdul Mannan Mondol and former MP Anwara Habib.

The house also condoled the death of noted journalist and editor of Bengali daily Samokal Golam Sarwar, Sunamganj Municipality Mayor M Aiyub Bakth Jaglul, editor of English daily Financial Express AHM Moazzem Hossen, US Senator John Maccain, Language veterans Halima Khatun, Abdul Baten, Independence Award recipient Dancer Bazlar Rahman Badal, executive editor of daily Observer Anis Ahmed, freedom fighter and writer Major (retd) Qumrul Hasan Bhuiyan, writer Rama Chowdhury, former Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) President Mostaque Hossain, member of Bangladeshi peace keeping mission Lieutenant Commander Ashraf Siddiqui who was shot dead in South Sudan, two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College killed in bus accident Dia Akther Meem and Abdul Karim, Ansar member Liakat Ali who gave guard of honour in exile Mujibnagar government, private television channel ETV senior journalist Mamunur Rashid and noted actor Rani Sarker.

Dr Shirin also expressed deep shock at the death of people who were died in terrible flood at Kerala in India, earthquake in Indonesia and accidents held in different places at home and abroad.

Participating in the discussion on Mostafa Rashidi and M Tajul Islam Chowdhury, Leader of the House Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recalled the contribution of both the lawmakers and expressed her deep shock and profound sorrow.

Opposition Leader Begum Rawshan Ershad also expressed deep shock and conveyed deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved families.

Besides, members from both treasury and opposition benches including industries minister Amir Hossain Amu, commerce minister Tofail Ahmed, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, health and family welfare minister Mohammad Nasim, Kazi Feroz Rashid, Jatiya Party Secretary General AMB Ruhul Amin Hawlader, state minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mashiur Rahman Ranga, Fakhrul Imam, Mir Shawkat Ali Badsha, Abdus Salam Murshidy, Nurul Islam Omar and Monirul Islam took part in the discussion.

They conveyed deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved family and prayed for the lasting peace of his departed soul.

The lawmakers also observed a one-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed souls. Later, a munajat was offered seeking eternal peace of the departed souls.

As a mark of respect to the death of the sitting members Mostafa Rashidi and M Tajul Islam Chowdhury, after adoption of the obituary reference and munajat, the speaker adjourned the sitting of the house at 6:21pm to resume it again tomorrow September 10 at 5pm.
