DHAKA, Sept 6, 2018 (BSS) – State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam has said the humanitarian and economic costs of global crisis management reached $23.5 billion in 2017 which was the highest so far.
The costs have been increasing due to giving shelter to 1 million Rohingya people in Bangladesh along with the human, economic, social and environmental disasters (in the world), he said.
The state minister was speaking at a general discussion of high level forum on ‘Culture of Peace’ at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York City on Wednesday, according to an official release here today.
Bangladesh is the proponent of the culture of peace since its birth as the country’s basic principal of foreign policy is ‘Friendship with all and malice to none’, the state minister said.
Mentioning that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed the proposal of ‘Culture of Peace’ before the UN that was registered in agenda in 1997, Shahriar said it was accepted unanimously in the UN on September 13 in 1999 as a resolution with the title ‘Declaration and Programme of Action on Culture of Peace’.
UN General Assembly President Miroslav Lajcak delivered welcome address in the discussion while Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO Nobel Laureate Dr Rigoberta Menchu Tum addressed it, among others.
