National Power and Energy Week begins in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Sept 6, 2018 (BSS) – National Power and Energy Week-2018 began in the district as elsewhere in the country today with a call to creating much awareness among the people about the optimum use of electricity for the greater interest of the country.

This year’s theme of the week is ‘Onirban Agami’.

Marking the week in a befitting manner, Northern Electricity Supply and Company Ltd (NESCO), division 1 and division 2 here of Bangladesh Power Development Board have jointly chalked elaborate programmes till September 8.

The programmes include publicity, pasting posters, leaflet distribution, illegal electric line disconnection, motivational campaign to use energy saving bulb, digital meter and solar panel, honoring consumers for good practices, giving prizes to the winning students for participating in the debate competition and awarding journalists for best reporting.

In the morning around 10.30 am, deputy commissioner (DC) Gautam Chandra Pal formally inaugurated the week through releasing a number of balloons in the sky in front of Independence Square in the town here as the chief guest.

Mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah Masud Jahangir Kabir Milon and additional police super, B circle, Moynul Haque were present at the event as special guests.

Speaking on the occasion, DC Gautam Chandra Pal said sustainable development and modern progress could not be imagined without power and energy and the present government is firm to reach the uninterrupted electricity supply to door to door throughout the country.

The necessity of electricity and energy is very significant to turn Bangladesh into middle-income Bangladesh by 2021 and developed country by 204, the DC added.

The DC asked the officials and the employees of the company to take necessary steps to halt misuse of electricity and its system loss anyhow and discharge their duties with sincerity, transparency and accountability.

Earlier, executive engineer of NESCO, division 2 M. Anwarul Isalm said the main objective of the week celebration was to focus the government success in the power sector side by side with creating mass awareness in economic use of electricity.

Executive engineer of NESCO, division 1 M. Shamim Ahmed said the electricity production had reached to 20,000 megawatts at present due to setting up of new power plants and more 500-MW electricity was being imported from India.

Later, a big colorful rally led by DC Gautam Chandra Pal was brought out and ended at the office of NESCO, division 2 of the town after parading the main roads of the town.

A large number of officials and staff of the company participated in the rally.
